We're really excited to officially kick-off the Mixed Chicago club season on Sunday! In order to give you some information on what to expect Sunday, we've listed the process for Sunday, described each drill, and provided information on what we are looking for. Please try to be cleated and ready to go at the posted start time for your session (9:00 am or 11:30)--it's a pretty packed day.
0:00-0:15
Registration
We'll have everyone sign up, take their picture with the number they sign up for, and then pin the number to their back so we can keep track of everyone and hopefully provide folks useful feedback after the process if requested.
0:15-0:30
Warm-up
We'll jog and do an active warm-up with a few basic plyometrics.
0:30-0:40
Introductions and Division
We'll circle up to do some individual stretching and talk a bit about each team's goals, then divide into four groups for the days' drills.
0:40-1:26
Round 1 (4 10 minute rounds with 2 minute break for rotation)
(1) 6 x 25 shuttle run
Two cones will be placed 25 yards apart. Each player will begin at one cone, then sprint between them, turning at a point even with the cone. Meant to measure speed and the quickness of a player's change of direction.
(2) Vertical (w/ short toss on the side)
A simple measurement of the player's standing vertical. Not quite as fancy as the NFL combine, but just as functional. While waiting for their turn, other players should take advantage of a chance to throw.
(3) Three-man marking
Two players face each other about ten yards apart, one holding a disc. A third player begins marking the player with the disc. For the first four stall counts, the player does not use their hands and the thrower only fakes. At stall five, the mark starts using their hands and the thrower may throw. Once the thrower releases, the marker should run to mark the second thrower. The marker does this for 90 seconds, and then the marker switches to a throwing position. Each person should mark twice.
In this drill, we are looking for the ability of the mark to contain and effectively hassle the thrower. We are looking for throwers to effectively fake with the disc and to be confident in consistently breaking the mark.
(4) Hucking with defense
Players will line up in two lines -- offense and defense. Another designated thrower will huck. The play initiates when the offensive player takes his first step, and the defender then reacts.
In this drill, we are looking at the ability to attack the disc at a high point, read the flight of long throws, speed on deep cuts, and catching ability.
Water Break 1:26-1:36
During the water break we will give instruction on the "triangle of death drill."
Round 2 1:36-2:21 (2 22 minute rounds with 1 minute break for rotation)
(1) Triangle of death (2 stations)
Each player will have the opportunity to throw both in-cuts and deep cuts while on the move. In this drill, we are looking at the accuracy and consistency of the player's throws, the ability to throw when tired, the ability to throw to cutters moving toward and away from the disc. We'll also be looking at the cutting player's catching and cutting techniques.
(2) 3 v. 3 (2 stations)
A chance to play. Games will be "make it take it" and a mini field with a stall count of 7. We'll be looking for aptitude with the disc, decision-making, defense and field sense.
2:21-2:30
Wrap-up
We'll discuss the tryout process from this point and answer any questions.
We look forward to seeing you out!
